A weeklong swim program in Chillicothe is helping children with developmental disabilities build life-saving skills and independence in the water.

The Pioneer Center/Ross County Board of Developmental Disabilities hosted its annual iCan Swim Camp at the Ross County YMCA from June 22-26, serving 30 children, according to a community announcement.

For many families, the program addresses a broader safety concern as drowning remains a leading cause of accidental death among children with autism, particularly those prone to wandering or drawn to water, according to the announcement.

“The iCan Swim Camp gives children with developmental disabilities the opportunity to learn essential water safety and swimming skills in an environment designed to meet their unique needs,” RCBDD Superintendent Amy Beeler said. “These are skills that build confidence, promote independence and can save lives. We’re proud to partner with our community to provide this opportunity for the children and families we serve.”

Focus on safety and independence

The camp comes as Ohio expands efforts to protect vulnerable children. Earlier this month, Gov. Mike DeWine signed the Joshua Alert into law, creating a statewide alert system to help quickly locate missing children with developmental disabilities.

While the alert aims to speed search efforts, officials emphasize prevention through programs like swim instruction, according to the announcement.

"For many of the students we serve, water is incredibly appealing," said Trish Wallace, RCBDD community inclusion coordinator. "This camp teaches them how to enjoy the water while learning the skills they need to stay safe."

Individualized instruction in the water

Campers worked one-on-one with certified instructors to develop personalized swimming goals based on their abilities.

Small class sizes allowed instructors to tailor lessons and help participants build confidence while learning techniques designed to keep them safe in and around water, according to the announcement.

The instructors hold multiple certifications, including water safety instructor credentials through the American Red Cross and adapted aquatics instructor certification through iCan Shine, the parent organization of iCan Swim. Staff members are also trained in lifeguarding, CPR and first aid.

The program was organized into five daily sessions with six swimmers each, grouped by age to ensure each child received focused instruction.

Life jacket training and lasting impact

A key component of the camp focused on life jacket safety. Participants practiced entering and moving through the water while wearing properly fitted life jackets, learning how the equipment functions.

Each child received a life jacket provided by The Pioneer Center at the end of the session to use with their families.

For parents, the program’s impact extends beyond a single week, offering reassurance that their children are better equipped to stay safe around water, according to the announcement.
